Fifty years ago this coming summer, I worked in the corn fields detasseling corn. Hard, hot, miserable work. It paid well for a fourteen year old, so I was happy to do it for six weeks; two summers, long ago. In reflection I see I have been happiest working with the earth, being out in nature. I wonder what can I do these remaining years of work, with my feet in the soil and the Sun on my face?

Handpicking cotton or shucking and cleaning corn is hard work, but I agree with you - if I'm going to be working, being outdoors can be a plus.
ReplyDeleteI am thinking maybe part-time seasonal work in a Garden Center.
DeleteOne of mother's last remaining memories was of the 'bump board' on the horse drawn wagon on the sharecropper farm where she grew up. You apparently threw the cobs into the wagon and the board keep them from going over the other side... canny folk, farmers.
ReplyDeleteCobs were used to heat with or maybe burn in the stables on those cold blustery day.
